Choosing hospice care does not mean that a patient or family is permanently committed to hospice. Circumstances can change, and a patient may decide that hospice is no longer the right choice for their current needs or goals.

What Does It Mean to Leave Hospice?

Leaving hospice is known as revoking hospice care. A patient or their authorized representative can choose to end hospice services.

A patient may choose to leave hospice for different reasons. Their condition or care goals may change; they may decide to pursue other treatment, or they may feel that hospice is no longer the right fit for their current situation.

Can You Return to Hospice Later?

Leaving hospice does not necessarily mean that hospice cannot be considered again.

If a patient later meets hospice eligibility requirements and chooses hospice care again, they may be able to re-enroll. The hospice team can explain the evaluation and enrollment process based on the patient’s circumstances at that time.

What Happens When You Leave Hospice?

When a patient chooses to leave hospice, the hospice team can help explain what happens next and coordinate the transition from hospice services.

The patient’s care needs, medications, equipment, supplies, and other arrangements may need to be reviewed as part of the transition. Families should discuss these changes with the hospice team before services end so they understand what to expect.

Can a Patient Change Their Mind About Hospice?

Yes. Hospice is a choice, and patients and families can ask questions about their options at any point.

If you are unsure whether hospice continues to be appropriate, talk with the hospice team about your concerns. The team can help explain the patient’s current plan of care and discuss what options may be available.
